Aikido Academy SGV Classes

There are no “beginners'” classes; new students simply begin attending the classes they like. For the first couple of classes you will receive personalized instruction, generally from one of the Aikido Academy’s more experienced students. You will quickly practicing with everyone else as a regular student in no time at all. Of course, with any physical activity it helps to be in reasonable physical shape, but this is not a requirement. The instructors and students will work with you to keep you challenged but will never force you to do anything you are uncomfortable with. As you train, you will improve your flexibility, balance, and coordination. Class usually starts with some warm up and stretching to prevent muscle damage. Depending on the proficiency level of those in attendance, the instructor will demonstrate 2-3 techniques after which students practice with a partner. We leave it up the students to decide what their comfort level with any of the activities and respect individual limits.
Kids Class (5-12years)
Kids classes always begin with a formal opening and an extended period of warm-up and stretching followed by conditioning exercises such as jumping sticks, rolling, tumbling, various relay races and more. These activities are designed to be fun for the kids. Then, depending on the age limitations of the particular class, rudimentary techniques are taught, including usage of the proper Japanese terms, in order to give the child a familiarity with the methods and culture of Aikido that they will be learning later on. Youth classes will be similar in focus to the Adult Fundamentals class but with a fun, energetic format appropriate for the kids. Classes always end with a group game such as roll tag followed by a formal closing.
Weapons Class (Sunday only)
Our weapons program focuses on the following: Tanto (wooden knife,) Jo (wooden staff,) and Bokken (wooden sword.) The dojo has weapons for use during class by students. The practice with Tanto focuses on control and submission using unarmed techniques. The Jo and Bokken combine both suburi (practice strikes) and control and submission using unarmed techniques. For advanced students, randori (multiple attackers,) is practiced using any one of the 3 weapons.
